First signs of summer at Mags' house: asparagus poking out of the ground. Found a 'block' of wild asparagus in our cornfield a few years ago and we re-planted it into a garden area--voila--asparagus every spring-summer. The sprouts are always first on the scene. :D

A second sign of summer: getting a down and dirty lesson on the riding mower and the essence of mowing in straight lines (haven't been on one in 2 years, and no, it's not like a bicycle). Hubby later apologized, saying he's not a very good teacher. Hm. I agreed with him there and chocked up his less than enthusiastic manner to the fact he'd been putting polyurethane on the new cabinets he's making without a mask. Hmph, men and their straight lines...I rather enjoyed my free form method.

From CBS News: The approximately 24-inch (60-centimeter) snake was found coiled in a dark corner of the reptile house, about 200 feet (60 meters) from where it had escaped from a holding cage outside the exhibit into a space described by officials as a labyrinth of pipes and equipment.

"As you can imagine, we are delighted to report that the snake has been found alive and well," the zoo's director, Jim Breheny, said during a news conference as he stood in front of a huge picture of the snake projected on a screen.

Erm...yeah, I bet. Just keep your snakes inside the zoo...thank you very much.

I wonder if the BZC will be able to continue his twitter...does the reptile house even have wi fi? And how does he do it without thumbs?

Unpacking from a big move: why does it seem like I'm just moving junk from one room in the house to another? Four more boxes to go...

Back on the farm to live permanently, or however permanently it may be;-). Here's a couple of pics from today's hike in the nearby hills, muddy from all the rain (more tomorrow!) and not a green thing in sight. Still a favorite place to walk:

According to NY Daily News:

A Bronx woman broke the world sprinting record this week in Manhattan, completing the 60 meter race with a record time of 29.86 seconds.

The time may not seem like world record numbers, but they do hold up especially since the woman who broke the record is 95-years-old.

Weighing in at 86 pounds and a height of 4 feet 6 inches, Ida Keeling began running almost thirty years ago from the advice of her daughter. Two years after her daughter suggested running, Ida ran her first 5K race, and she hasn’t quit yet.

Since then she has broken several records including, fastest sprint in 2008 with a time of 31.82 seconds. In 2009, Keeling lost the world record to 94-year-old Grace Foster of Tabernacle, NJ with a time of 31.22 seconds.

A record the nonagenarian earned again last year.

According to ABC, Keeling only takes one medication per day and she attributes her longevity to eating a dinner meal for breakfast and a small breakfast at dinner. When asked how long she will run she said she hopes to "make it to 108," which is four years past her father’s mother.

***Plus she wears kick-ass yellow running shoes. Now that's my kind of woman.

...and 1100 miles later. Road trip back to the great frozen north, aka, the farm. Holy crap, it's cold...and snowy.

Pretty good time really, especially carting around two 70+-pound German Shedders, who whine at the blue signs saying ‘rest area’. They say they have to pee, but I really know they just want to sniff the trees. And a husband who never whines nor sniffs trees, but does have a bladder the size of a walnut, hence we brake at almost every rest area.

FYI, Missouri and Arkansas—you really need to drill in a line for warm water in those outside restrooms. Cripes, a gal could freeze her hands off washing them….just sayin’.

"My tennis balls are where?"                            "Rest area! Can we stop? Huh?"

Heard this at work from a man who changes his mind as often as he changes his underwear (at least I hope, I have no real knowledge):

"Hey, I'm rigidly flexible."

Erm...what? Yet somehow it makes sense...sort of...

In celebration of the new year, ran a 5K this morning. And as I hobble to the fridge for a diet Coke, I’m reminded of some sage advice given to me a few years ago by my (then) 80 year old mom, as she was heading out the door to swim: “ya gotta keep movin’”.

For someone who put off exercising since Thanksgiving-ish, the words are now ringing in my head. Thanks, Ma!

He doesn't have a shovel, but he has a horse...and that's so much cooler :D.

P.S. May need a sweater when he gets to your place. And possibly 6 snowshoes, 4 very large.
